About Radio Free Marseille

Richard Pearson has been talking for several years about starting a radio station to serve the English speaking community in the South of France, where we holiday frequently. There is an excellent station already broadcasting there, in Riviera Radio, but it's very much a mainstream station that plays very little to suit our personal taste.

Given our mature, but still rebellious dispositions, we felt it would be fitting to base such a station in Marseille, that most mature and rebellious of French cities. For 2000 years of its 2500 year existence, Marseille was independent of France and the vast bulk of its residents still feel that to be the case, spiritually speaking. Given all that, we decided that Radio Free Marseille would be an apt name for the new station.

Playing a heady mix of Prog, Jazz, Soul, Folk, Electronic, Classical, Opera, Blues, Rock, Rock and Roll, Punk, Rap, Reggae and New Wave, with a strong emphasis on World Music (particularly French language), we will be attempting to emulate the creative undercurrent that surges through our favourite city. We are intending to launch sometime in 2022 and are already assembling an international cast of top quality presenters, all of whom believe passionately in conveying the spirit of Marseille to listeners, all across the South of France and beyond.

RFM won't be a bog-standard radio station and will be far more of an arts foundation on radio, with the intention of recording original music for broadcast and eventual commercial release on it's own label, amongst other things.
